Magical Weekend in South Africa at the Majeka House

Stellenbosch is one of those destinations that takes your breath away.

From the rolling hills, to the storybook buildings, award-winning restaurants and pristine wineries, it’s almost doesn’t seem real! As much as we will try to relay it’s beauty through blogs and photos, we won’t be able to do this region justice. All we can do is HIGHLY encourage you to go!! And when you do, you must stay at the Majeka House. It’s perfect. Here’s why:

1. Location

Located in the heart of Stellenbosch, in the middle of a residential area, staying at the Majeka House will have you feeling like a local. The staff even gives you a walking guide to the neighborhood - what better way to work off all that wine, and make some new friends while you’re at it!

2. Design

From the moment you walk into the Majeka House, you feel as though you’ve entered an enchanting, magical world! From the intriguing library/bar, to the chic indoor pool, and the pristine and stunning courtyards, you know instantly this isn’t your average hotel. We loved watching sunsets from the rooftop terrace (and had some fun photo shoots you may see at the end of this blog).

Every room at Majeka House is unique, and everywhere you turn there’s something new to see. Our bed was cozy, our terrace was on a relaxing courtyard, and the towels may have been the biggest and best we've ever used (may seem random, but you'll see when you get there). We could go on and on about our room - we would have bought the furniture if we could have! (Side note: Bobby’s a shower snob. It’s rare that he gets excited about a hotel shower - but according to him, the one at the Majeka House was a 10! That’s rare!!)

3. Hospitality

The staff at the Majeka House were top-notch. They knew us by name, made sure our every need was met, and even offered to do our laundry!! We love it when the hotel staff feels like family, and that’s just how it felt here. A perfect example is that when we had to leave early on our final morning, they packed us lunches! We didn’t want to leave!!

4. THE FOOD (In all caps because IT WAS THAT GOOD)

The Majeka House is known for their breakfast - and it took about .02 seconds to see why! Their picture-perfect breakfast spread tasted just as delicious as it looked. Fresh-pressed juices, homemade bread and cakes, muesli (our favorite!), cheeses, wild meat, fresh fruit, and SO much more! Don’t even get us started on their cappuccinos. All in all, they practically had to roll us out of the breakfast room every morning!

We also had the pleasure of having our last dinner in Stellenbosh at the Majeka House, award-winning restaurant “Makaron”. We dined on such delicacies as baby marrow risotto, panga fish, and creme brûlée. We ate slowly, so we could savor and enjoy every bite. It was easily one of the best meals we had all trip, and the perfect way to end our time in wine country.

We can’t wait to return to Stellenbosch and our friends at the Majeka House. It’s truly a boutique hotel experience that we won’t ever forget!

A Rockin' Weekend at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana

The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana was an incredible experience. It was the first time either of us experienced an all-inclusive resort, and all we were thinking was “don’t make us leave”. It started from the moment we arrived. A short trip from the airport, you drive up on a beautiful property and are quickly greeted by friendly valet attendants. It couldn’t have been more than 1 minute before we were in the air conditioned lobby with tropical drinks in hand! After an overnight flight, this was a dream. We waited in a short line, spotted a few professional athletes, and took a stroll around the property before heading to our room. It was definitely a short stroll, considering how massive the property is. The Hard Rock Punta Cana boast 13 pools (with swim-up bars), 9 restaurants, 23 bars, a Jack Nicklaus designed golf course, a beautiful Rock Spa®, the biggest casino in the Dominican Republic, world class shopping, and over 1700 rooms.

After the warm welcome, opening our door to our Caribbean Suite took the experience to another level. Our room had a big, comfortable bed, a private bath with double showers, free liquor dispensers (an all-inclusive must), free Wi-Fi, a balcony overlooking the ocean and courtyard, and a hydro spa tub! We freaked out over the spa tub. It was so sad that we only had two nights here, because we could have easily spent a whole day just hanging out in our room ordering room service (which is included!!) and bouncing back and forth between the balcony and the hydro spa tub. But we made the most of it. We relaxed in the tub while watching the TV right above it (we don’t have cable at home), and spent one afternoon watching the sunset and smoking cigars on our balcony.

While we only had 2 full days at the resort, we did our best to explore as much as possible. We definitely took in more than 2 full day’s worth of food… we probably ate more like a week’s worth. We ate our 3 dinners at Ipanema, Zen, and Toro. Ipanema is a Brazilian style restaurant where servers walk around with various meats and poultry ready to slice you your choice. Zen is a Teppanyaki style restaurant that specialized in both Chinese and Japanese dishes. While the food was fantastic, we were really here for the show the chef puts on as he creates the meal right in front of you. We enjoyed the family style meal and we made some friends at our table! Lastly, we ate at Toro, their amazing Steak house! At Toro we had some choice cuts of meat and enjoyed incredible views. On top of dining at these 3 restaurants, we may or may not have made a few trips to Pizzeto, their restaurant serving artisanal brick oven-style pizza into the late hours each evening. Please don’t judge us. Even with full bellies each night, we woke up hungry to indulge in breakfast buffets or room service. We tried to avoid lunch so we wouldn’t put on too much weight…

After breakfast or lunch we would explore to try and walk off some of the food. After dinner we would dance. The ORO Nightclub is the ultimate dance party! They had a local DJ that gave us a remarkably authentic Dominican nightclub experience. One night we went to a beach party, where we had some island cocktails and did more dancing. You could describe our trip here as lounging, eating, and dancing. At the end of the night (but also running throughout the day) you can catch one of the trams that will take you all over the resort. This is definitely a plus when you’re ready for bed and your feet can’t handle the walk back.

We spent our days on the beaches and at the pools. The beaches are wide-open with beautiful white sand and warm blue water. It was surprising that with so many rooms, the beaches were very mellow. There were always plenty of open chaise lounges and hammocks for us to nap in. During the day, the beaches were always a relaxing, quiet place to be, while at the pool you could either find a good spot for a drink and a book, or you could get wild in some crazy pool activity. We did a little of both, spending most of our pool time lounging, but then also checking out the foam party and doing some water aerobics to burn some calories. All the pools had bars nearby, and many of the pools had swim-up bars. There was also a water park for kids, where Bobby was disappointed when he heard he was too big for the water slide. Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana even has a lazy river, where you can get in an inner tube and float a large loop around the property. Regardless of if we were on the sand, by the pool, or floating the river, the serene vibe and beautiful surroundings demanded we enjoy many naps while at the Hard Rock. Thank you for the relaxation!

With all that we did get to enjoy, we can’t forget to mention some of the amazing amenities we did not have time for (you need at least 5 days here). First of all, they have 9 restaurants and we were only able to get to 4. There are so many incredible cuisine options here, satisfying anything you can imagine. You can go to one of their specialty steakhouses or Asian cuisine like we did, or you can indulge in one of their incredible buffets! There is also an 18-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus (arguably the greatest golfer of all time). We saw the beautiful course, but did not have time to experience it! For those of you that cannot hit a golf club, there’s also a mini golf course!

You can probably tell that we did not have nearly enough time at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana. We ate, drank, danced, and lounged. We didn’t even shop or spend time at the Casino! But we aren’t worried that we missed out, we just know that we need to spend more time here! If you’re interested in having a rockin’ time like we did, check out the website at www.hrhpuntacana.com

Thank you Hard Rock! We will be back!

Pitbull Live in Punta Cana!

During our amazing stay at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, we had the opportunity to rock out with Pitbull! He performed in front of a full house at the Filmore Lounge on-property.

We did not really know much about the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino experience when we first arrived. The idea that there would be a concert on-property seemed EPIC (and it is), but it is in fact the norm at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino properties.

Also, the resort is essentially a music museum. Hard Rock Hotels are recognized globally for their distinctive design that says “This is Hard Rock” (a Hard Rock slogan). From the moment you walk in the lobby, the walls are adorned with curated memorabilia from rock legends we all know and love (who often donate the artifacts themselves). This too, is the norm at all Hard Rock Hotel & Casino properties. What makes it even more awesome is that they embrace the attitudes, culture, and charisma of each location to make it unique. Local music culture and history will influence the design of each property. So if you are in Latin America you will see Shakira memorabilia, compared to Palm Springs you will see Frank Sinatra memorabilia. Along with the locally inspired artifacts, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana guests will be eager to see Elton John’s hand-painted piano, Tommy Lee’s Motley Crüe silver space ship outfit, Gene Simmons’ custom axe base, Sammy Hagar’s 1926 hot rod, and MADONNA’S LIMOUSINE. That’s right, they have the sparkly, sequins-tiled limousine that Madonna used at the Grammy’s in 2001. This is definitely a standout in the collection of rock memorabilia at the resort. The music memorabilia on-property at the Hard Rock definitely gets you in the right mindset before heading to a concert :)

In terms of the Pitbull concert, we did not know what to expect! We were not sure how many people would be there, if we would know that many of Pitbull’s songs, and what kind of performer he is. All we knew is that he is the king of collaborations. He has recorded songs with Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Belinda, Austin Mahone, Ne-Yo, Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, Usher, Eminem, Fergie, Chris Brown, Ke$ha, and more! We had our fingers crossed that maybe one of them would be there?

Before the show, we did a little more research on Pitbull. First of all, Bobby had to dig into how he was able to collaborate with so many major artists. It turns out the Pitbull is a very savvy businessman. We also found out that he uses his fame in a positive way… challenging his fans to push themselves and pursue their dreams. He helped build the Sports Leadership and Management Charter Middle and High School in Little Havana, the neighborhood where he grew up in Miami. He came from poverty and used the obstacles in his life to fuel his journey to becoming “Mr. Worldwide”.

And did you know that his stage name and style all come back to his past? Maybe you actually thought his name was Pitbull? His name is Armando Perez. He grew up in Miami, the child of emigrants from Cuba. It was his family that inspired him to learn about his Cuban background, and why he learned of José Martí. Martí was that Cuban national hero and poet that taught Armando the effectiveness and power of words. He used these words to escape the streets of Miami, and it was then that he identified with a pit bull. He said in an interview that pit bulls have a lock-jaw, and they refuse to give up because they are too stupid to lose. He believes that the lock-jaw like quality has been the key to his success. As for his style, you will never find Pitbull performing in casual clothing. He shows up in Armani suits to show his maturity and evolution. He wants to inspire young people to leave their old lives and go after something bigger

So after a little background, we were pumped to see Pitbull perform. We would be looking closer at his suit (especially as it gets really hot in most venues), and were excited to see his energy for a close-to-home-crowd that he undoubtedly inspires.

Honestly, we were blown away. Pitbull rocks. Solo, without any of the superstar artists he collaborates with, he brought a remarkable show to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana. He came out dressed in a black tailored suit, and from the moment the first song began he never stopped dancing. The show is a combination of choreographed dancing from Pitbull and his dancers, as well as plenty of songs were he interacts with the crowd and is having a blast. The energy is high, the fans are crazy, and Pitbull and his dance crew put on quite a performance.

He played over 15 songs, the majority of which were major hits that we knew all the words to…

- “I Know You Want Me”

- “The Anthem”

- “Bon Bon”

- “We Are One”

- “Give Me Everything”

- “Don’t Stop The Party”

- “International Love”

- “Timber”

- And plenty more!

We couldn’t believe how many songs we knew! We were really impressed by his stage presence, how excited he was to be performing, and how thankful he was for his fans. There were multiple times where he talked about how grateful he was for the opportunity to be with us, and there was an authenticity to him that we really appreciated. He definitely wow’d us!

Thanks Pitbull, for giving us an amazing experience and for encouraging us to shake our Bon-Bon’s! It was an awesome night!

2 Year Anniversary to Napa With Surf Air

We are always excited to fly. It may be the adventure of take-off, the views from the sky, or just the fact that you are soaring in a giant metal machine. Regardless, flying is our favorite. Lately, however, we have been having our share of flight delays, bad airport food, and really long security lines. If you’re a frequent traveler, you know how frustrating and utterly exhausting this can be.

Well frequent flyer friends, we’re here to share about an incredible airline that cuts out the bad parts of flying and will CHANGE YOUR LIFE. We’d like to compare it to the first time we flew Business Class… it ruined us. We loved it so much and now we struggle to fly anything but Business Class. That being said, meet Surf Air. Surf Air is the nation’s first all-you-can-fly private air travel club. Surf Air provides their members with a comfortable, efficient, and luxurious travel experience that saves valuable time in every trip. Surf Air currently serves 12 destinations in California, and they will be adding more locations in the near future!

We decided to try out Surf Air for our 2-year anniversary weekend in Napa. (Yes we’ll probably always be the Traveling Newlyweds. It’s a mentality!) We arrived at a private terminal at the Hawthorne Airport, to a complimentary valet service that took care of our car for the weekend and helped us bring our bags into the terminal. Yes. A complimentary valet service at the airport. The “spoil factor” is immediately very strong.

A friendly Surf Air concierge checked us in, which means greeted us with a smile and offered us a drink and snacks. No hassle with tickets or baggage, no security, no waiting! You sit in a comfortable lounge (with complimentary WiFi and refreshments), and when it’s time to go you walk outside and straight onto the plane. We arrived a little over an hour early, since Bobby is the person that likes to be at the airport extra early to be cautious. Well, with Surf Air, we were the only ones in the lounge for probably 45 minutes, because you don’t need to be there until 20 minutes before departure! What a dream!

When it was time to go, our pilots met us and walked us over to the plane. The Surf Air fleet is gorgeous. Their planes definitely stand out at the airport with their sleek paint jobs and beautiful branding. Once aboard, your seat is both an aisle and a window seat! The seat is a comfortable, black leather chair that we may have had a few naps in. Our pilots went through a quick introduction, showed us where the refreshments were located (very important), how to use the emergency bathroom (and by emergency we mean EMERGENCY.), and we were off!

Bobby was concerned he would get motion sickness from such a small plane, but this was not a problem at all. We couldn’t believe how smooth the take-off, flight, and landing was. And he was so fascinated by watching the pilots, he was pretty distracted the whole time!

The flight to Napa took about an hour and a half, and the views from our plane were incredible. We were legitimately bummed when we started our descent into Napa - we didn’t want our ride to end! We walked off the plane to see our rental car waiting for us, right there, on the runway. What!? Are you picking up how immensely spoiling and EASY this mode of transportation is? It took a total of 10 minutes from touch down to having our bags in our car! Oh, the joys of private jet travel!

Another wonderful Surf Air concierge was there to great us when we landed, and help us with our belongings. She even gave us winery recommendations and directions to our hotel. We can’t say enough about the Surf Air service! It really is five stars.

What really sealed the deal for us was on the day we were catching our flight home, since we now knew that we didn’t have to be at the airport until 20 minutes before our departure. This gave us another FULL DAY to explore Napa. We’re SO used to arriving at the airport 2 hours before a flight, this was a luxury we simply could not get over. A Surf Air highlight was when we were sitting at Gott’s Roadside at 2:30 eating an amazing burger and enjoying some wine with our flight taking off at 3:15 PM. If Bobby was honest, he would probably say he was sweating on the inside. But we made it with ease! Our TOTAL travel time to get home to Orange County from Napa took us less than 3 hours!

Surf Air is an incredible travel experience. Maybe it should be called “Spoil Air”? We are excited to fly with them again soon, and eager to hear when they expand to international travel… :)

When Traveling with Your Spouse, Don’t Be Afraid to Be Goofy…

Traveling with your spouse is the best. There's nothing better than exploring new places and cultures with your favorite person on earth! While you and your spouse may travel a little differently and have diverse personalities, we'd like to propose a challenge. On your next trip together, don't be afraid to be GOOFY!

Whether you are the extrovert who is the first one on stage during Karaoke, or the shy recluse who would rather hole up in your room and read a book, we ask that you push the boundaries of silliness on your next trip. Here’s why…

Being silly will help you make more friends. When we challenge you to be goofy, we’re asking that you let your hair down and have fun. In those moments, you will have a smile on your face and your joy will be contagious. People gravitate towards those that are having a good time, so naturally you will meet more friends!  On our trip to Fort Myers & Sanibel Island, we had the opportunity to bond with some fellow bloggers, as well as some random locals along the way. We went on an incredible parasailing adventure with Sunny Island Adventures as well as a beautiful kayaking tour of J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge. While we have INCREDIBLE memories from the scenery of those excursions, our favorite memories are those with our new friends. Driving in the rain belting Adele’s new song or jumping for joy when spotting a manatee outside the Harbourside Grill… we treasure those!

Acting goofy will cause you and your spouse to develop a unique sense of humor with inside jokes and memories that are yours… and only yours. This is probably one of our favorite things about marriage. As you live life together, you develop a ridiculous sense of humor that is completely yours. Most of the humor that we have between us probably is not that funny to others around us. But that makes it more fun :) This happens more while we are traveling, because while traveling you are often relaxed, stress-free, and often have days full of laughter. Traveling also wears you down, and those moments come where you lash out because you are hungry (Bobby) or you have some strange comments in your sleep (Alli). Sometimes these happenings cause mini fights in the moment (Bobby’s hanger), but give us years of laughter when reminiscing.

Being wacky will gain more trust and respect for one another. Whether it is watching the other one dance crazy, or grabbing the microphone and singing karaoke, we think being goofy builds trust and respect. Often being goofy can be really vulnerable, and embarrassing. Going for it with the one you love screams, “I love you, I trust you, and I don’t care what anybody thinks of me but you”.

A little silliness makes vacation more RELAXING and more of an ESCAPE from your normal. This may sound like more of the same, but it’s just a reminder to let loose a little bit on vacation. Vacation is meant to get away from the daily grind, so let yourself do that. Eat some ice cream, go on the kid’s waterslide, and climb the palm trees if you want to!

Getting out of your comfort zone = more fun! One way we do this is by taking ridiculous pictures. On our trip to Sanibel Island, we found some great spots for fun photos on Cabbage Key as well as in town on Sanibel. While you may get some awkward stares while snapping the photo, you will have great memories from the experience!

Whether you have a spouse, a significant other, or are traveling solo, we think these are great reasons why you should push the envelope of silliness. It will make your trips more memorable, and you will make new friends to share those experiences with. We’d love for you to send us an email and share with us how you unwind, relax, and act goofy. Happy traveling!
