Our Second Visit to Coastal Mississippi - And Why We’ll Be Back ASAP

We first ventured to the Mississippi coastline in mid-2019, on a road trip in our cozy, tightly-packed Prius (With Sally too!). With little expectations on arrival, we were wowed by our hotel, the food, the experiences, and the people! Our second visit, in November 2020, was no different (well, besides the fact that we had a bigger car and a baby). We had grand plans to head back to all of our favorite Coastal MS spots, but we were pleasantly surprised to find some new gems, too! From tasty new restaurants to incredible new activities for the whole family, Coastal Mississippi continues to have us wanting more.

Why? Let’s start with where we stayed. In case you need a refresher, in 2019 we stayed at the Roost, the most beautiful little boutique hotel just a short walk from downtown Ocean Springs. It’s quaint and chic and cozy all in one—not to mention connected to an incredible (and under-the-radar) speakeasy. How can you possibly beat that?!

Well, their sister property, the Beatnik, is brand new to Ocean Springs, and it’s just as magical. The Beatnik boasts four modern, luxurious floating cabins that we were obsessed with from the moment we walked in. From a Covid-19 perspective, we had zero interaction with anybody to check-in, and the room was only cleaned on an as-needed basis (with safety precautions in mind). We all had our highlights… For me (Bobby), it was the outdoor shower. Alli loved the pool. Jude wanted to sleep in the hidden bunk beds (not quite ready, though). And Sally lived for the refreshingly cool floors in the bathroom. This place was a dream!

Such an incredible room at the Beatnik!

Looking down on the Beatnik.

Love the design at the Beatnik.

Jude’s nap time is Mom and Dad’s pool time.

Upon rising, which was earlier this year than last (thanks Jude), the first stops for coffee and breakfast are Bright Eyed Brew Co and the Greenhouse on Porter (for biscuits that are to DIE for). Bright Eyed was a success, but because Greenhouse was closed that day we had to branch out… and French Kiss Pastries was a hit! For our afternoon coffee, we discovered Jacked Up Coffee Bar in Biloxi and were not disappointed. If you’ve been following us for awhile, you know that finding cool coffee shops is our jam!

Our favorite spot in town!

Look at those biscuits!

Jacked Up Coffee Bar is another great coffee shop!

With so many interesting museums and art galleries throughout Ocean Springs, we were shocked to find another pop up in the past year (and our favorite one yet) - the Mississippi Aquarium! It was definitely a highlight of the trip for all of us! Check out more info here on another blog post we recently shared :)

First time seeing a stingray for Jude!

Loved our day at the aquarium!

One thing that we thought would be very different on this trip were our dinners. We had a few amazing meals on our last trip (see our blog on why Coastal Miss is Seafood Heaven) at Vestige and White Pillars, and just assumed that having a 9 month old in tow would ruin everything. Somehow, we were able to have two equally dreamy evenings out that included mouthwatering food, social distance, and romantic ambiance (even with the kiddo!!). One night we enjoyed Dinner on the Lot, a ticketed event designed to bring fine dining outdoors while highlighting local hand picked produce. Our meal also featured beer pairings with every course, courtesy of Craft Advisory Brewing (which is directly across from the Lot). With 6 courses and 6 beers, it was probably the highlight of our month-long road trip. Here were the courses:

  • Partridge Peppers

  • French Hermit Oyster

  • Jurgielewicz Duck

  • Two Dog Farm Carrots

  • FL Spiny Lobster

  • South African Boerewors

  • Craft Advisory Root Beer Floats for dessert

Full bellies for us all!

Look at those carrots!

A whole lot all for us!

Intrigued? You should be! You may notice by those courses that not only are they using local produce, but they’re proud to show off exotic ingredients and dishes. It was SO FUN!

On our final night in town we had probably the most romantic beach picnic of our lives set up by Coastal Picnic and Co. With an array of finger foods, wine, and an unreal sunset, it was (and we don’t say this lightly), the perfect night. Even Jude was in heaven. (His teepee!!)

The dreamiest setup!

Isn’t it so beautiful?!?

The best way to spend our last night in Mississippi

It’s no surprise Coastal Miss was one of our first places that we returned during our only big road trip of 2020. And guess what? We’d be stoked if we could head back again in 2021! That’s how much we love this place! The area continues to flourish and we can’t wait to get back as soon as possible.

The Coastal Mississippi Promise: When you visit The Secret Coast, you will be met with warm welcomes and 62 miles of shoreline dotted by unique coastal communities. 5 Family Friendly Adventures in Coastal Mississippi

In our pre-parent life, we spent most of our time in new destinations bouncing from coffee shops to breweries, with random activities sprinkled in throughout the day. Well, our lives have drastically changed with the addition of our son— so our travel norms have had to adapt! We’re still seeking out the best coffee and breweries, but we’re also constantly on the hunt for visually engaging adventures that can stimulate him more than watching YouTube (ha!). During our recent visits to Coastal Mississippi (both in 2019 and 2020), we have found plenty of activities that are perfect for our growing family! While we’re certain there will be more on our next visit to The Secret Coast, these are currently our 5 favorites:

1. Mississippi Aquarium

The new (and BEAUTIFUL) Mississippi Aquarium is definitely a must for all families visiting Coastal Mississippi! With nearly one-million gallons of both fresh and salt-water, the aquarium has over 80,000 square feet of exhibits with landscaped walkways meandering throughout. You can learn about and see a variety of species covering the water (obviously), land, and air! Some of the highlights include the alligators, river otters, stingrays, and shorebirds!

Jude was obsessed with the stingrays and the stunning giant viewing area that makes you feel so small! We loved the 360-degree tunnel where you could feel like you were right in the water with all the sea life!

There really is SO much for the whole family at the Mississippi Aquarium. They have daily programming that could keep you there all day, or you can pick and choose your favorite spots and go at your own pace. If Jude was a little older (or if we left him at home), we’d love to go back for an “Otter Chat” or to watch the “Aviary Feed”. We can’t wait to go back!

2. Museums and Murals

Your time in Coastal Mississippi will at some point have the elements of an art walk whether you like it or not. From the colorful murals you can find on your downtown walks, to the Walter Anderson or Ohr-O’Keefe Museums of Art, there is plenty of art to appreciate!

3. Shrimpin’ with The Biloxi Shrimping Trip

If you have kids that are a little older than Jude (maybe 4+), the Biloxi Shrimping Trip may be the highlight of their (and your!) visit. This 70-minute “Living Marine Adventure” cruises the calm waters of the Biloxi shoreline and will teach you everything you ever wondered about a real shrimping expedition. They’ll put the shrimping net out upon departure, and will catch a variety of marine life for everyone to see (with shrimp being the main haul). If you’re a Forest Gump fan, it’s pretty epic to experience “a real shrimpin’ boat” (as Bubba would say).

Identifying all that we caught with the captain!

4. NASA’s official visitor center for Stennis Space Center

Another highlight for families with kids that are in the 4+ range, is the INFINITY Science Center— it’s out of this world (hehe, I had to). With over 35,000 square feet of exhibit space, families can experience a variety of education exhibits, hands-on adventures, and, my favorite, the MASSIVE section of a Saturn V Rocket (one that took men to the moon!). There’s also a Hurricane Prediction Lab, 3D Immersive Theater and the Biome Boardwalk, so it’s easily a whole day adventure!

5. Sweet Treats…

While we’re confident the whole family will find joy in the aquarium, shrimpin’, and the science center, there’s a chance that some may eventually get bored with all the history chatter. What’s a better way to resolve that than some tasty sweet treats!

With plenty of options throughout the Coastal Mississippi area, here are our favorites:

Sally LOVED the pops!

Bonus - The Beach!

Being Southern California natives, we often overlook that many people don’t have access to the coastline! With that in mind, Coastal Mississippi boasts twenty-six miles of soft white sand (the longest man made beach in the nation)where you can find massive stretches all to yourself! Grab your sunscreen and towel and go enjoy a snooze on the sand! Or build sand castles with the kids!

Back when Sally was our only baby :)

For us west-coasters, Coastal Mississippi is an under-the-radar destination that we love visiting again and again. With new activities and good restaurants coming in constantly, it won’t be under-the radar much longer. This beautiful stretch of coast is perfect for the whole family, and we can’t wait to head back!

The Secret Coast - Coastal Mississippi

Shh… We’ve got a secret.

It’s a good one.

We’ve discovered an area that we never knew existed. Beach towns that are so picturesque and under-the-radar, you’d need to be a local to know about it. Or follow a really cool traveling couple… ;)

It’s a place where the seafood is plentiful and fresh, the hotels are charming and quaint, the weather is warm and breezy, and the white, sandy beaches are absolutely pristine. It’s a place called Coastal Mississippi, and it’s one of America’s best kept secrets. (In our humble opinion.)

THE BEACHES

One of the most surprising elements of Coastal Mississippi is the expansive and jaw-dropping coastline. There’s over 26 miles of scenic beaches, and there are even a handful of stunning islands you can visit (check out Ship Island, named one of the best beaches in the US)!

Whether you’re in the mood for a day of sunbathing or a sunset stroll along the water, it’s the ideal place to soak in the warm Mississippi sunshine and breathe in the crisp ocean breeze. And many of the beaches in Ocean Springs, Bay St. Louis, and Pascagoula allow leashed pups!

THE TOWNS

There are Twelve coastal communities that span throughout Coastal Mississippi, and while we didn’t have time to explore all of them, we did get the chance to see quite a few. Here are three standout towns that we absolutely adored!

Ocean Springs: This quaint, historic, and charming town quickly became one of our favorites. Known as the “City of Discovery”, Ocean Springs is buzzing with shops, restaurants, museums, galleries, and more! It’s incredibly walkable (we hardly drove our car while we were there), and the centuries-old live oaks gave ample shade wherever we ventured. Oh, and Ocean Springs is incredibly dog-friendly, too!

Biloxi: As soon as we found out that Biloxi was once known as “The Seafood Capital of the World”, we knew we’d like it. This epicenter for sea life is as scenic as it is adventurous, with activities ranging from sailing, jet skiing, and state of the art casinos! But more on that later… ;)

Bay St. Louis: It’s of no surprise that Bay St. Louis was named one of the “Coolest Small Towns in America” by Budget Travel, it’s absolutely lovely! Whether you’re looking for a day of shopping and brunching, or you’re in the mood to play a round of golf, Bay St. Louis has something for everyone. Don’t miss the incredible “Angel Trees of Bay St. Louis”, live oaks that have been carved into works of art!

Such a stunning stretch of coastline!

THE ACTIVITIES

The activities in Coastal Mississippi are endless. One could spend an entire summer here and not run out of things to do! We suggest exploring Coastal Mississippi’s site for a full list of activities… but here’s just a few of our personal favorites!

Biloxi Shrimping Trip (Biloxi): Our inner Bubba (or Forrest Gump) was brought out on the Biloxi Shrimping Trip, as we learned the ins and outs of shrimping, local marine life, and the shrimping industry in Biloxi! Our knowledgeable and quirky captains kept us laughing during the entire two hour tour, and the best part is… Sally, our Bernedoodle, was able to join!

Walter Anderson Museum of Art (Ocean Springs): Chances are you haven’t heard of Walter Anderson before, but believe us when we say you’ll be blown away not only by this American painter’s array of stunning artwork - but the legacy he left as well!

Ohr O’Keefe Museum of Art (Biloxi): One of the most jaw-dropping buildings in Coastal Mississippi is this fascinating and strikingly beautiful museum. It’s home to an incredible collection of ceramics by the famed sculptor George E. Ohr, who’s affectionately known as the “Mad Potter of Biloxi”.

Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum (Biloxi): If there’s one thing Biloxi does well, it’s seafood. This expansive and well-designed museum gives a look into Biloxi’s rich history in the maritime and seafood industry, with a wide variety of exhibits showcasing shrimping, boat building, recreational fishing, and more!

Infinity Science Center (Pearlington): The Infinity Science Center is a dream for star gazers, Nasa lovers, history buffs, and all children. It’s a non-profit science center that has a mixture of jaw-dropping exhibits and hands on experiences where you can learn about space, earth sciences, engineering, and technology. You’ll definitely want a few hours here, as there is a ton to see. Our favorite parts were the hurricane simulator (you get to stand in a tube with hurricane force wind) and the Saturn V rocket (the same one as the rocket used to send Neil Armstrong to the moon). Crazy!

Time to catch some shrimp!

The Walter Anderson Museum is an epic way to spend an afternoon!

THE LODGING

There is no shortage of lodging options in Coastal Mississippi, from extravagant casinos in Biloxi, to cozy B&B’s in Bay St. Louis, they have something for every type of getaway - and every type of budget! We adored where we stayed, but if you’re looking for something different you can find a full list here

The Roost Ocean Springs: We have a short (but growing) list of places quaint inns and boutique hotels that have stolen our hearts… Places that we can’t wait to return to, and places that we hope to bring our kids one day. The Roost Ocean Springs is one of those spots.

This chic boutique hotel is situated in a restored historic building, with eleven spacious and luxurious suites. It’s cozy and welcoming, very dog friendly, walking distance from downtown Ocean Springs, and even boasts a casual grab + go market called “Eat Drink Love”, and a fantastic speakeasy called “The Wilbur”! We’d return to Coastal Mississippi just to spend more time at The Roost. Just mark our words, it’ll happen.

We’re not leaving

The Roost was definitely Sally approved

THE DINING

The seafood in Coastal Mississippi is so good, we dedicated an entire blog about it (which you can find here). But don’t think for a moment that seafood is all that they serve here! This fun and eclectic culinary scene has a little something for everyone - here’s just a few of the spots that stood out to us… When we weren’t indulging in crawfish nachos. ;)

Mockingbird Cafe (Bay St. Louis): The love for coffee, good food, and people runs deep at this local coffee shop and cafe, and the feeling is absolutely contagious. We’re big fans of their lunch menu (get the BLT with avocado), but from what we’ve heard, everything they serve is delicious. And they welcome dogs on their outdoor patio!

Pop Brothers (multiple locations): We’ll just say it right now. You haven’t been to Coastal Mississippi until you’ve been to Pop Brothers. This family-run “artisan ice pop” shop is what summer dreams are made of, with flavors ranging from Matcha Green Tea to Reese’s Cheesecake! Whatever flavor you decide on (and the decision will not be easy), you’ll be hooked. We’ve yet to try a better popsicle!

Bright Eyed Brew Co (Ocean Springs): We’re suckers for a coffee shop with good branding, and this one caught our attention just minutes after arriving in Ocean Springs. It was just as delicious (and adorable) as we had hoped, and their waffle menu is not to be missed! (We even let Sally have a taste!)

Yummy lunch at the Mockingbird Cafe!

We've Found Seafood Heaven, and it's in Mississippi!

Hey, seafood lovers!

Pay attention. We’ve traveled extensively throughout the US, and at this point we can confidently say we’ve eaten our way around the country. (If you follow our Instagram stories, you know just how true this is.) At this point, we really should have one of those bumper stickers on the back of our car that says “WILL TRAVEL FOR FOOD” - because that’s basically become our life’s motto!

One of our favorite genres of food is fresh seafood. It’s rare that we find it on our road tripping escapades, but we get SO excited when we do. We had no idea Coastal Mississippi was the seafood mecca that it is until we visited a few weeks back, and we’re still drooling over the meals we had in this picture-perfect destination. Here are four of our favorite spots, in no particular order, so that you too can one day discover the mouth-watering cuisine this “secret coast” has to offer.

THE CHIMNEYS

Located across the street from the sand, The Chimneys is an elevated and picturesque dining experience that will undoubtedly satisfy all of your seafood cravings! From seafood gumbo, to crab claws, to their famous shrimp salad, their menu is extensive and decadent and fantastically fresh. We recommend sitting outside for a Gulf view!

Lunch with an ocean view!

THE OLE BILOXI FILLIN STATION

This beloved Biloxi restaurant is nothing fancy, and that’s exactly why we like it. It’s home cooking at its finest - and it’s the spot that many of the local fisherman come for lunch, every single day. That’s when you KNOW it’s good! The Ole Biloxi Fillin Station has a hearty and drool-worthy menu that features charbroiled oysters, fried shrimp po boys, and the real star of the show, crawfish nachos. Go hungry.

WHITE PILLARS

We love discovering a date night spot that has it all - an innovative menu, farm to table cuisine, specialty cocktails, a romantic ambiance, a friendly staff… You get the idea. White Pillars has all of that, plus a fascinating history and a passionate chef, Austin, that will eagerly share its story. Austin gathers the best and freshest produce from the local farmers market every weekend, and is constantly changing the menu as new seasonal ingredients become available. You can be assured that whatever seafood Austin is serving, it will be of the best and freshest variety!

Beautiful decor at White Pillars

Every dish is a work of art!

VESTIGE

From the moment we arrived in Coastal Mississippi, people were telling us we NEEDED to go to Vestige. This quaint little restaurant is quite the talk of the town - and for excellent reason! Their chef Alex Perry is a James Beard semifinalist, and their rotating seasonal menu is one of the best in the state! Their seafood “Catch of the Day” is constantly changing, but trust us when we say that it will inevitably knock your socks off. ;)

Incredible steak and beautiful presentation!
