The Traveling Newlyweds Guide to Mammoth Mountain

So, you can say we’re Mammoth newbies.

This past month we ventured out to Mammoth Mountain for the first time. Which is pretty unheard of if you’re born and raised in Southern California like us! We grew up hearing about our friends “making the trek” to Mammoth Mountain, but that usually consisted of a 5+ hour drive, in traffic, and that’s just not our jam. Then we found out that Alaska Airlines, (our favorite), offers a quick one-hour flight from LAX to Mammoth Mountain - and we booked the next flight. Literally.

In the couple of days before we left, we did some hardcore Mammoth research. Where to eat, where to stay, what to do, etc… And we’re pretty confident in what we ended up accomplishing on our short trip. Here’s our “round up” for all that we did in this charming mountain town, and we hope it convinces YOU to book a flight as well!

First things first, the flight. It was easy. Painless, really. We were up in the air for just enough time to enjoy the views and a glass of wine (for Alli) and a beer (for Bobby)... and then we made our descent! As always, the Alaska Airlines team was top-notch. They made sure we were comfortable, told jokes, fed us our weight in cheez-its (also our favorite), and ensured every need was met. We've grown to love these smaller flights, because you really get to know the staff. It feels like a family affair - causing us to wish the flight was longer!

Also - did you know that if you fly Alaska, you can ski free? Alaska Airlines has a promotion that allows you to show your boarding pass, and get a lift ticket! The details vary on the resort and airport you are coming from, but it is definitely worth looking into!

The Mammoth Airport is adorable. There’s only one terminal, one baggage claim, and only a handful of flights a day. We got our bags in about .5 seconds and were on a cozy bus to the town before we knew it! Here begins our guide:

WHERE TO STAY

The Mammoth Mountain Inn

We booked this little inn on a whim, and we’re so glad we did. It’s the PERFECT location if you’re a skier or snowboarder, as it’s nestled right next to the lifts. Most mornings Bobby would go do a couple of runs around the mountain before Alli would even wake up! The rooms are quaint and “lodge-like”, and the lobby is complete with oversized fireplaces and a fun restaurant/bar. It’s about a 15 minute drive (or bus ride) to town, so that’s something to keep in mind as well. If you aren’t planning to ski or snowboard like we did, you might want to stay somewhere a little closer to the village. If you’re coming for the mountain sports, the Mammoth Mountain Inn really is the most ideal. It all depends on what you’re looking to do!

WHERE TO EAT

The Yodler

This German Bavarian-style restaurant is right at the base of the slopes, and an easy walk from the Mammoth Mountain Inn. It is EVERYTHING you’d want and more after a cold day on the slopes… Delicious drinks, hearty soups and entrees, and the biggest (and most delicious) pretzel you’ll ever have. Honestly, we’d make the trip back to Mammoth just to get this pretzel again! And you’ll be proud to know that we finished it!

The Melt House

Only accessible by the slopes at the base of Chair 14, the Melt House is another spot that delivers epic comfort food in a picture-perfect location. Great music, an expansive sundeck, and a scrumptious menu. Who doesn’t want a tasty grilled cheese and a craft beer in between runs down the mountain?

Campo

Woodfire pizzas, seasonal ingredients, and craft cocktails… Campo has all of our favorite things! Located in the heart of the Village, it’s a great date night spot. We came here on our first night in town, and couldn’t have been more pleased. We're still dreaming about their pizzas! (Take our advice and order your own - don't share. They're that good!)

The Stove

If you love breakfast like we do, this place is a must. Heck- even if you don’t love breakfast, you’ll love the Stove! It’s been a Mammoth Mountain institution for years, and for good reason. It’s country cookin’ at its finest, and everything on the menu is delicious. We highly recommend the french toast and the breakfast burrito… But like we said, you can’t go wrong! (And the earlier you get there, the better. The Stove fills up quick!)

WHERE TO DRINK

Mammoth Brewing Company

This is another one of those places that’s a “no-brainer” when you’re in Mammoth. Their beer is world-famous, and the ambiance is a blast. Get the Original Tasting, it’s only $9 and you get to try 7 of their most well-known ales. They also serve food, and it looked pretty tasty - so that’s definitely something we’ll try next time!

Stellar Brew

We came to Stellar Brew one afternoon to get a hot beverage and escape the cold. We ended up spending a few hours in the eclectic little coffee shop, playing cards and chit-chatting with locals. Their coffee and tea selection is extensive, and they have a lot of great healthy dining options as well. Get the Yerba Matte Latte if you’re looking to try something new… it’s delicious!

We stepped into Black Velvet Coffee and instantly felt like we were transported back to a hipster coffee shop in LA! The coffee is smooth and strong, and their coffee knowledge is impressive. We can see why "BVC" has a cult-like following.

WHAT TO DO

Where do we even start? Mammoth Mountain has a never-ending list of activities, for all ages and all personalities! From skiing and snowboarding, to tubing and snowmobiling, to snowcat tours and scenic gondola rides... the options are endless. And that's only in the winter! If you love the outdoors, fresh mountain air, and beautiful scenery... Mammoth will definitely be up your alley. And if your idea of a good time is more simple; good book, glass of wine, delicious food and fun shopping -- they have all that and more! Oh, and Mammoth is extremely dog friendly - so bring your pooch! We'll be bringing ours this Summer! :)

Like we said, we're relative "newbies" to this mountain town, and we can't wait to return and discover more hidden gems. So until then, leave a comment and let us know what we're missing from this list! And we'll be sure to add to it this Summer, when we bring our pup. :) Already counting down the days!

Monterey Beyond the Aquarium: Whales, Wine, and More!

One thing we love about travel is the ability to visit familiar spots and experience something new. We recently spent a weekend in Monterey, somewhere we have visited several times, and decided to change it up a bit (we normally head to the aquarium). We ended up having the BEST time and discovered a newfound love and appreciation for this part of the California Coast. Here's some of the new things we did that we would HIGHLY recommend!

Whale Watching

This area is a mecca for whale watchers, no matter what time of year! (mid December - April for blue whales, mid April through mid December for Humpbacks) We went with Discovery Whale Watch Tour and they took us on a two-hour tour that brought us close to 6 different whales! It was AMAZING!! We also saw tons of sea otters, seals, and jellyfish (the jellies were a bit terrifying). The boat can be rocky, so if you get seasick definitely prepare yourself. But the experience is 100% worth it!

John Steinbeck Center

John Steinbeck fans? This is something you DEFINITELY don't want to miss! Located in Salinas, just outside of Monterey, you can visit the center that is dedicated to John and his literature. The museum is incredibly well-done (and fun!), and you could easily spend a whole day learning about the man behind all the classics. Whether you're taking a quick break or wrapping up your time at the center, just a mile away Steinbeck's home that's now a restaurant! While we didn't have time to eat there, we heard the food is awesome! And how cute is his home?

Wine Tasting in Monterey Wine Country

Did you know they made wine in the Monterey area? We didn't. Apparently the warm sun, cool fog, good soil, and the topography of the surrounding land and sea have combined to create a vintner's paradise. With over 60 tasting rooms, it's a fantastic spot to spend your day (or just a couple of hours)! Known for their Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Riesling, each winery has an amazing selection. We drove along the River Road Wine Trail one afternoon, where we indulged in the Odonata, Scheid, and Hahn wineries. Go out and explore for yourself, as Monterey County has some great wines!

Exploring Cannery Row and Nearby Treasures

While we've been to Monterey several times, we've never actually just walked around the surrounding area! Weird, right? Our favorite walk was from the wharf to Cannery Row, and here's what we recommend that you do. Park at the wharf, and turn left. Take the trail along the water and you'll walk past fun shops, restaurants, along the historic Cannery Row, and even the aquarium (You can easily spend a whole day there - it's incredible)! We walked to First Awakenings for breakfast and back, and it was the perfect way to start the day! If you have a bike, this would be an AWESOME spot to bike ride!

These are just a few of our favorites activities that took our trip to Monterey to the next level. If you have anything to add, let us know! We're looking for new spots to visit next time!

California Coast = Best Coast

One of our favorite drives EVER is along the Highway 1 in California. The dramatic coastline spans from Southern Cali to Northern Cali, and every turn, twist, and bend offers a new picture-perfect view. It’s one of those drives you shouldn’t take when you’re in a hurry. Quite frankly, we recommend you do it with little-to-no plans! We recently went on a short weekend trip to Monterey County, and spent a day meandering up and down the 1 from Monterey to Big Sur. We probably stopped 20 times in a matter of hours - there was too much to see (and photograph)!!

Here’s a few of our favorite vantage points, and some photos to show why.

1. Soberanes Point and Soberanes Point Trail

This was our first stop - and probably our favorite. As we cruised south out of the Camel Highlands, the landscapes started to change, and we were antsy to turnoff at the first available spot. Soberanes Point has a lookout up high, as well as a trail on the water, that will offer the jaw-dropping views you're looking for. We hiked up to the top of the mountain for an EPIC vantage point of the coastline. (Make sure you’re wearing comfortable hiking shoes, as exploring these trails can get a little intense.) We then hiked down to a lookout that was absolutely breathtaking. We watched as 10+ foot waves crashed along the cliffs, and marveled at the blue, unruly seas. It’s definitely not a coastline that’s conducive for swimming!

2. Rocky Creek Bridge

Just under a mile away from the famous Bixby Bridge, the Rocky Creek Bridge can easily be mistaken for it! Every bit as picturesque, this bridge is definitely worth the stop. You can climb down to the base for a photo op, and it’s usually less crowded than Bixby. It’s an architectural marvel, and absolutely stunning to see up close!

3. Bixby Bridge

The Bixby Bridge is world-famous, and we can see why. Not only is it one of the most photographed bridges in the world, it's been in TV shows (Pretty Little Lies), movies (Play Misty for Me), and video games (GTA)! Built in the 1930's, it's an architectural marvel- that will cause you to just sit and stare. We recommend parking and taking your time walking around. You can even cross the street and get some cool views from behind the bridge, and that's not a bad spot for a picnic! If you're really feeling daring, you can walk along the edge to the bench in the center of the bridge! Definitely not for the faint of heart, but worth it for the photo op!

4. Hurricane Point

Named for how windy it is up there, Hurricane Point is one of the highest points along Highway 1. From this spot you'll have incredible views in all directions. You'll even have a great view of Bixby Bridge (to the north) from this spot. Just be sure to hold on to your hat!

5. Pfeiffer Beach

We missed out on this one, because we got really hungry (See our blog on where to eat in Monterey to read more about Ventana Big Sur for lunch). This "secret" beach looks incredible, and we have in on top of our list for when we are back in the area. It's apparently a bit difficult to find, as there is no signage. It's a beautiful, unspoiled beach with the famous Key Hole rock, and apparently some purple sand (Purple?!?). We need to go back ASAP!

6. McWay Falls

Waterfalls are just plain cool. This one is no exception!! There's an easy trail that allows you to traverse along the cliffs, and gives you epic views and different perspectives for photos. On a sunny day the water is almost translucent it's so blue! Unfortunately you can't access the beach where the falls are located, but that makes it feel very untouched and rural. We recommend that you go early morning or late afternoon - we were there mid-day and the sun was too bright for a good photo of the waterfall, but still worth the stop. A MUST SEE on your drive! (Just look out for the signs... it can be easy to miss!)

These are just a few of our “must-stops”, but honestly EVERYWHERE you turn is breathtaking!! Take our advice and make a day out of this small (but mighty) stretch of California coastline. Next time we plan to pack a picnic and find a secluded spot along the cliffs that we can sit and enjoy the views. And best part is? It’s picture-perfect year round. We went in January and the weather was amazing!

Where to Eat + Drink in Monterey

We’ve said it numerous times on our blog and Instagram, and we’ll say it again. We LOVE to eat. Wherever we’re traveling we try to find the best spots to dine, and this last trip to Monterey was no exception. While we were only there for around 48 hours, we made the most of our time, and did our best to hit up some old (and new!) favorite spots!

BREAKFAST

First Awakenings

You know the restaurant is good when you can’t leave without buying their shirts. (We both bought them - that never happens!) This fan-favorite, family owned restaurant is by far the most popular breakfast spot in town. And for good reason. Everything is fresh and cooked to order with locally sourced ingredients. Known for their eggs benedict, (and we both love a good eggs benedict), we both ordered different variations. And a pancake to share. Everything was delicious, and SUPER filling. Definitely go hungry, it’ll keep you full until dinner

MUST TRY:

  • The eggs benedict (ADD CARNITAS!)
  • The pancakes

COFFEE

Cafe Lumiere

Located in the center of Monterey, not only is this coffee shop really convenient, but it’s also really good. Whether you need a spot to sit and get some work done, or you’re looking to grab a coffee and a pastry to go, Lumiere is the place to be!

MUST TRY:

  • The almond milk au lait
  • Any of the baked goods, we loved the croissants!

LUNCH

Old Fisherman’s Grotto

A Monterey classic since the 1950s and located on the wharf, you can’t beat the location, the view, or the food! While they’re known for the freshly-caught seafood, Old Fisherman’s Grotto has just about everything! We recommend going for lunch, but we’re sure they serve an amazing dinner as well. Ask for a table by the window - it’s worth the extra wait!

MUST TRY:

  • The clam chowder
  • The burger (random, but it’s SO good)
  • Any of the fresh fish!

The Sur House Restaurant at Ventana Big Sur

This is a favorite of ours, partially because we came here on our honeymoon, and partially because the views and the food simply can’t be beat! Located in Big Sur, the Sur House restaurant has a panoramic view of the California coastline, and it’s absolutely stunning. Definitely plan on taking your time and make a long lunch out of it. This spot is too special to rush! (Also, if you're splurging - just stay at Ventana!)

MUST TRY:

  • The Surf and Turf short rib sandwich
  • The Falafel Wrap
  • The Friend Chicken Sandwich

DINNER

La Balena

If you love good, authentic Italian food, La Balena is a MUST during your time in Monterey County! Nestled in the quaint and cozy town of Carmel, La Balena is the perfect spot for a date night or a special occasion with friends. The menu changes seasonly, but it’s one of those places where you know that whatever you order, it will be good. Definitely make reservations, as the restaurant is small and does fill up quick.

MUST TRY:

  • Any of the pastas, you can’t go wrong.
  • The Butternut Squash Soup (if available)

Jacks Monterey

You know those restaurants where you look at the menu and EVERYTHING sounds good? That’s exactly what Jacks Monterey menu is like - we wanted it all!!! From fresh seafood to delicious burgers to vegetarian dishes… they have something for everyone. The ambiance is fun and modern, and if you happen to be staying at the Portola Hotel (like we were), it couldn’t be more convenient… it’s located in the lobby!

MUST TRY:

  • The cauliflower steak appetizer
  • The Monterey Cioppino (maybe don't eat lunch before...hehe)

DRINKS

Grasings

Charming, sophisticated and cozy… Grasings is the kind of bar you’d picture in Europe. Located in Carmel, it’s the perfect spot to grab a drink and an appetizer or two before dinner. While their wine list is extensive, we’re really big fans of their cocktails. And their charcuterie tray. Wow wow wow, their charcuterie tray… pictures don't do it justice!

MUST TRY

  • Any of the cocktails
  • The charcuterie tray… and thank us later.

Fieldwork

Beer drinkers, this is the place for you! This fun and casual beer spot serves up some of incredible craft brews and is really popular with the locals. Grab a couple pints, make some friends, and breathe in that salty ocean breeze. Oh ya, did we mention it’s outside? So make sure you dress accordingly!

MUST TRY:

  • Bloomsday IPA
  • Coffeetown Milk Brown Ale
  • Daypack Pale Ale
  • Monsoon Double IPA
  • It really just depends on your taste... they have so many beers to try!

Inn at Spanish Bay at Sunset

If you don't know about this, it could be the highlight of your trip. Each evening, at sunset, the Inn at Spanish Bay has a bagpiper close out the day with iconic Scottish sounds. Enjoy tasty libations, light appetizers, and watch the sun put on a jaw-dropping show as it tucks behind the Pacific. If you're coming from the 17 mile drive, spend $35 at the Lobby Lounge and they'll reimburse you your $10 park entry fee :)

DESSERT

Revival Ice Cream

Ice cream is our weakness. Especially when it’s fresh, organic, small-batched artisan ice cream.  Revival came highly recommended to us, and after trying it once we totally see why. Their ice cream is innovative and incredibly tasty. Get a couple different flavors and share! (They change the flavors often, so some of these might not be relevant)

MUST TRY:

  • Eucalyptus Mint
  • Bee’s Knees
  • Coffee with Cocoa Nib

Exploring San Jose del Cabo

Exploring San Jose del Cabo

So, we just got back form the most epic stay at Paradisus Los Cabos, our favorite all-inclusive resort to date. It has everything - gorgeous rooms, amazing food, swim-up pools, tons of amenities, the BEST margaritas… we could go on and on. Another thing that they have going for them is the LOCATION. Located just ten minutes away from San José del Cabo and thirty minutes from Cabo San Lucas, it’s the perfect spot to feel “away” from the madness yet “close enough” to explore! During our stay we decided to spend a day in San José del Cabo, partially because it’s so close, but also because it’s one of our favorite towns in Mexico.
